Happy 81st Independence Day, Indonesia. May we never become so proud of our independence that we forget to ask whether everyone is truly experiencing it. Independence is not simply freedom from colonial rule. It is the freedom to live with dignity, to work with hope, to speak without fear, to receive justice, and to believe that this country truly belongs to all of us. That is the independence we must continue to build—and the independence we owe to the next generation.
